Five Facts About Dolphins

On June 20, 2011, in Wildlife, by admin

Dolphins only breathe voluntarily rather than automatically like humans, so if they’re knocked unconscious, they stop breathing.

Dolphins are common in Greek mythology and there are many coins from ancient Greece which feature a man or boy or deity riding on the back of a dolphin.

The Ancient Greeks welcomed dolphins; spotting dolphins riding in a ship’s wake was considered a good omen.

Dolphins live in herds, the size varying from species to species — from as few as five (the harbor porpoise) to herds numbering 100,000.

Dolphins are born weighing 30 to 50 pounds and are 35 to 50 inches in length.
